Description:

Within the course "Youth in conflict with the Law: educational measures" students should gain basic and specific competence in the area of work with juvenile offenders. Students will get knowledge about theoretical explanation of youth delinquent behavior, look into results and possibility of critical approach to researches (in the world and domestic) about the factors which contribute or prevent delinquent behavior of youth, they will learn about the role of Social Welfare Center during conduction of educational measures and about social work with juvenile offenders with institutional measures. The course is consisted of interactive lectures and field visits to institutions for juvenile offenders.
Course description
- Explanation of youth delinquent behavior
- Theoretical explanations of juvenile delinquency
- Contemporary researches in juvenile delinquency
- Juvenile offenders in Croatia (statistical data: age, sex, criminal acts, type of intervention)
- Features of juvenile offenders
- The role of Social Welfare Center in conduction of educational measures (non-institutional measures)
- Social work with juvenile offenders with institutional measures
- Particularities of approach to juvenile offenders and ethical dilemmas in work with juvenile offenders
- Possibilities of preventive work in the area of juvenile delinquency

Cognitive Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

1. define and distinguish terms connected with behavioural problems and delinquent behaviour of young persons

2. explain and consider modern theoretical approaches to delinquent behaviour

3. explain, identify and categorise factors that contribute to occurence and development (on all levels)

4.recognise and classify important factors conected with delinquent behaviour of young persons (casework) and to outline and interpret levels of risk for the occurence of delinquent behaviour of the youth

6. discuss about the causes of the occurence of the phenomenon/problem in behaviour and delinquent behaviour, and manners of acting on delinquent behaviour of the youth

7. interpret, critically evaluate and plan manners of work with children and the youth

8. conduct an interview with young persons in conflict with the law, prepare a documentation needed for proposing a measure and prepare an individual plan of cjnage for the youth in conflict with the law

9. propos (before and to the court), combine, elaborate and implement measures directed towards the youth in conflict with the law and their families within social work and Law on Juvenile Courts

10. plan and organise cooperation (teamwork) with all relevant institutions and experts

Practical and Generic Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- develop communication skills

- participate in experiential work

- apply gained knowledge and competences through examples of real cases and contact with the youth in conflict with the law and professionals who work with them

- clearly express expert opinioin on the basis of knowledge and learning in writing and orally

- plan and manage implementation of correctional measure

- make professional decisions
