Description:

Modern theories of society development. Basic indicators of economic, social and political development. The connection between economic, social and political development. Definition and various theories of social development. Global developmental agencies (World Bank, UNDP, OECD, MOR, VE, EU?). Globalization, Europeanization and social policy. Indicators of social cohesion. Factors and frameworks of contemporary social reforms. New social risks as a challenge to social policy reforms. Problems of construction of a sustainable social policy system in Croatia (pensions, health care, employment, social care, family policy, housing, civil society). Perspectives of the welfare state development in Croatia.

Cognitive Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

1. understand key theoretical perspectives oin social development and social policy

2. explain the influence of economic and social policy factors in encouraging social development

3. categorise and group crucial challenges, risks and stakeholders of modern social development on national and international level

4. explain and use the most important indicators and indices for measuring social development and social welfare

5. discuss and critically evaluate key issues of social development and social policy in some of the following areas: value changes and social development, inequalities in acces to education, gender equality, local social development, housing and social innovations, good governance and social development, social economy and social development

6. explain the methods of analysing social expenditure and apply them

7. gain knowledge and awareness about manners of advocating sustainable social development

Practical and Generic Skills:

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

- publicly present acquired knowledge and skills in written and oral form

- collect and analyse the data and information from various sources

- clearly discuss and elaborate their own opinions

- consider general and group interests in social policy

- use certain methods of social advocacy

1.1. Written examination

Written examination is a form of testing knowledge in which students have to demonstrate basic terms and concepts, compare and explain differences and similarities between concepts and theoretical approaches, explain the causes and consequences of phenomena. It includes 10 questions of open-ended type which cover all course topics, and answers carry 0, 1 or 2 points.

The grading is as follows:

0-10 Insufficient (1)

11-12 Sufficient (2)

13-15 Good (3)

16-17 Very good (4)

18- 20 Excellent (5)

 

1.2. Oral examination

Oral examination requires understanding of concepts and theoretical approaches and their comparison, explanation and conection, application of concepts and theoretical approaches to social reality.

 

Final course grade is formed as a grade point average of grades realised in mid-term examinations or written examination and the grade received for oral examination.
