Knowledge and understanding
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- define aims and basic principles in social work with the family,
- explain research methods and approaches used in social work with the family with regard to other scientific disciplines that deal with the topic of the family,
- define different approaches and criteria in defining the concept of family,
- recognise diversity of forms of family and changes in the structure and functions of the family,
- indicate and discuss basic sociological perspectives in the approach to family,
- describe different theoretical foundations for understanding family processes (marital/partner relations, parenthood, intergenerational relations),
- identify family needs and risks faced by the family in its functioning during the life cycle of fthe family and explain family resistances,
- recognise and explain basic elements of the assesment, planning and interventions in social work with the family.
Application
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- interpret different approaches of observing the family,
- interpret dynamic processes that influence the family,
- use guidelines from different theoretical approaches in recognising risks and protective factors in family environment,
- use knowledge from the area of family law and rights and services in social welfare in planning interventions in work with families at risk,
- outline phases of the implementation of the process of planned changes in work with the family.
Analysis
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- categorise different definitions and typologies of families,
- compare changes in the structure and functions of the family in different social periods and periods of time,
- indicate different risks and protective factors that influence the functioning of the family (on micro, mezzo and macro levels)
- analyse different forms of support to families at risk.
Synthesis
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- plan key elements in the assessment of family needs and risks
- organise collected information about the family,
- prepare family history
- propose application of individual rights and services and needed interventions intended for resolving family problems.
Evaluation
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- examine changes in family functions and the importance of family in modern society,
- compare advantages and disadvantages of different theoretical approaches to the family in reviewing family processes,
- assess the presence of protective and risk factors on the family level
- evaluate potentials of the family for overcoming difficulties on the level of individual members and family as a system, and the need to conduct professional interventions.
