Description:

The course aims to introduced those students who are interested with the development of dramatic pedagogy and modern approaches in drama-pedagogical work with children and the youth, and with the possibility of using different drama-pedagogical procedures in social work. The students will also gain practical knowledge about the possibility of using certain techniques in the work with different groups of users, about the indications when and who with and in what way is it desirable to use an individual technique, the aims that can be achieved through such work and advantages and possible difficulties in their usage. The main purpose of the course is to develop skills of creative expression and critical analysis, increasing the level of sensitivity, awareness of students of the possibility of personal active action directed towards solving certain social problems through the application of drama-pedagogical procedures in social work profession (f.e. the problem of violence, social exclusion, gender perspective and similar issues). Course description - Concept of "dramatic education - educational drama" - Historical development of modern drama-pedagogy world-wide. - Drama work with children and the youth in Croatia. - Drama games - Drama exercises - Drama improvisation. - Process drama and various dramatic techniques. - Forum-theatre. - Play-back theatre. - Using psycho-drama elements in casework and group work. - Possibility of application of drama-pedagogical procedures with various groups of users in social work (advantages and possible difficulties)

Cognitive Skills:

Knowldege and understanding

After successfully mastering the course, students will be able to:

- define basic concepts, aims and principles in the application of drama-pedagogical procedures in social work,

- explain the features of modern approach in drama work with the children and young persons with regard to the traditional approach,

- distinguish current problems and groups of users who should be included in the programs based on the drama approach,

- describe when, who with and in what manner it is desirable to use certain drama techniques in social work,

- discuss advantages and disadvantages of the application of this form of work in social work profession,

- identify specific features of dramatuc games and improvisations,

- explain basic elements of the process drama, the theatre forum and play-back theatre

 

Application

After successfullly mastering the course, students will be able to:

- interpret the ability to apply drama techniques in the work with various users,

- use acquired knowledge about different drama techniques in designing and implementing practical workshops and projects in social work,

- demonstrate the elaboration of personal contents and topis of wider social signifinace through the application of drama-pedagogical approach in social work,

- conduct various drama activities in groupwork with users.

 

Analysis

After successfullly mastering the course, students will be able to:

- compare the development and current trends in the area of drama pedagogy in the Republic of Croatia with those in developed European countries,

- analyse the applicability of various forms of drama work in social work profession,

- distinguish between the stages of groupwork and the possibility of application of various drama activities in individual stages,

- single out similarities and differences of forum theatre and play-back theatre,

- categorise different drama techniques within drama in process.

 

Synthesis

After successfullly mastering the course, students will be able to:

- plan the aims, users and contextual conditions for the implementation of projects based on the application of drama methods in social work,

- organise workshops to accompany the pšrinciple of graduation and respect voluntariness of the participation and freedom of expression of each participant,

- prepare a workshop with focused aims and methods of drama work.

 

Evaluation

After successfullly mastering the course, students will be able to:

- examine the level of personal consciousness and sensitivise certain social problems and expressed needs of the users in different segments,

reexamine personal potentials and structural limitations for the application of drama techniques in the profesisonal role of a social worker,

- compare advantages and disadvantages of the application of drama and other creative techniques in social work,

- valorise the applicable value of the acquired knowledge and competences through concrete work with users.

Practical and Generic Skills:

After having successfully mastered the course, the student will be able to:

• publicly present the skills of cretaive expression and critical thinking;
• express himself/herself publicly during groupwork;
• raise awarness about non-verbal communication;
• show the ability to recognise and direct group processes;
• reflect personal experience connected with thematic framework of the teaching;
• - show improved communication skills, skills of stage/public appearance and skills of group work.

Matching Assessments to Learning Outcomes:

Learning outcomes connected to the course of Drama-Pedagogical Approaches in Social Work will be tested by monitoring the successfulness of mastering the outcomes through workshop forms of teaching and final paper. In the paper, the student has to demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and the ability to apply drama work in the social work profession, as well as the ability to practically use the acquired skills in the creative, independent organisation of a drama workshop intended for a certain group of participants (according to personal choice).

The quality of the final paper is evaluated according to the following criteria: 1. elaborated need for project implementation in a certain area/with certain users/applicability of drama techniques, 2. creativity of the idea and proposed activities, 3. structure and applicability of selected activities, adjustment with the project aims and needs of the users, 4. comprehensiveness of the paper, usage and referencing of various sources...

The final grade for the course is expressed on a scale from 1 (insufficient) to 5 (excellent), and it is a result of the quality of the final paper and its oral defence (2/3 of the overall grade) and the quality of participation in the workshop (1/3 of the overall grade).
