Description:

Law is an important arena of inquiry for filmmakers today, which have become a key site through which public understandings about law and the legal system are produced and debated. Concurrently, film has also become an important vehicle of inquiry for lawyers who want to deepen their thoughts on various aspects of law. This course uses an interdisciplinary encounter between law and film as a lens through which to examine key legal and social concepts of justice, punishment, family, armed conflict etc. This course develops critical skills to assess, analyze and better understand the social mechanisms through which the law is created and implemented in Croatia and in the world. Students will be expected to review and comment on weekly film and reading assignments (related to the topics covered in movies), as well as to write essays with legal analysis of problems that are presented in the movies.

Cognitive Skills:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

After successfully mastering the course students will be able to:

• define the term ‘law’ through art and the movie;
• explain reasons why and how is a movie used as a tool for approximation and explanation of different concepts and legal institutes;
• isolate breaking points and milestones in the historical development of law in the movies;
• describe mechanisms of law’s influence on the creation of movies and vice versa;
• identify and critically evaluate social problems which require legal regulation through representation in the movies;
• identify and critically evaluate the degree of implementation of applicable legal solutions in the movies and display the correct valid social phenomena in the movies;
• discuss the prospects of development of display rights and the role of society regulator in the movies and in artistic expression in general.

 

APPLICATION

After successfully mastering the course students will be able to:

• interpret movies after their analysis from legal perspective – are they in accordance with social and legal reality;
• categorize movies with regard to their artistic achievement and the effects that they have on society and the creation of rights;
• apply acquired knowledge of law in analysis of the movies;
• illustrate the process of law creation and social relations through analysis and interpretation of the movies of social significance;
• use acquired knowledge for their own creative development and the interpretation of law as a mean of societal regulation.

 

ANALYSIS

After successfully mastering the course students will be able to:

• connect law deficiencies in the regulation of social relations, or the limits of law as described through the movies;
• differentiate movies that have artistic values and that accurately present social problems that require legal solutions;
• categorize and critically asses movies by legal issues that is displayed in them;
• analyze movies using legal arguments;
• extract films that have influenced society and different generations.

 

SYNTESIS

After successfully mastering the course students will be able to:

• formulate independent opinion about the movies that have social significance;
• prepare written and oral presentation of the movie analysis by using legal knowledge from all legal fields;
• manage discussions in class when analyzing movies;
• design potential methods of development of law and society on the basis of watching movies, or come up with a movie that would properly display the role of law in society.

 

ASSESMENT

After successfully mastering the course students will be able to:

• evaluate movies;
• critically asses the success of the display of a certain social problem in the movie;
• recommend which social situations could and should appear in the movie;
• make conclusions on the importance of the movies in the regulation of society and in the creation of law;
• make conclusion on possible manipulations via movies;
• reexamine the role which a movie plays in education in general

Practical and Generic Skills:

Movies which are shown to the students deal with contemporary legal topics. This course aims to encourage students to reflect on the events depicted in the film by using their legal knowledge. Through essays writing, students develop the ability to research the legal regulations and literature on a given topic and develop the skill of using legal argumentation. The latter skill is especially encouraged in discussions after watching movies, in which the contributions of students are also taken into consideration. The main purpose of the course is to improve the understanding of legal theory and the role of law in society in general and to explain different points of view on current legal problems, which were shown in selected movies, in a manner approachable to students.

Through learning, students will be trained for the public presentation of the acquired knowledge, to clearly structure and explain their points of view with the aim to develop communication skills and to participate in the teamwork.

Matching Assessments to Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge is assessed during lectures through written essays, oral presentations and through participation in discussions.

During the course active participation is encouraged and the student's ability to explain the reasons and articulation of the reasons is assessed through the interaction of teachers and students. Students' ability to interpret the film using the fundamental principles of law and adopted legal knowledge in general is assessed through discussion. The ability of synthesis of acquired knowledge is assessed through student obligation to present essay and participate in the discussions. Furthermore, students' ability to distinguish between the importance that law has in the regulation of society, extract key films which present the current legal issues, conclude on the role of film in society and the need for the use of films in the interpretation of social and legal relations is assessed through the conversation with the student.
