Description
In this course participants will gain an overview of the main schools of economic thought from the middle ages till the present day, as well as the most important cultural, political and legal impacts that they have had on the society at large.
Course Description:
Introduction to key economic theories, concepts and ideas, as well as investigation into their relevance to contemporary social and political issues on a local, national and global scale, by examining the key components of national and international economic systems. Although certain basic and important economic issues are discussed during the course, it does not require a background in economics. Rather, the course aims to help students in their first contact with economic theory and doctrines to understand the main principles of economics and evolution of contemporary economic systems. Economics evolved through a long process in which various thinkers through the dialogue with the works of their predecessors and their contemporaries with the aim to provide answers for pressing problems of society. This course emphasizes the historical context as well as the analytical contents of those theories, the evolution of economic thought and changing perspectives on the role of markets and the state in the economy. The course is built with a balance of historical and theoretical approaches in the study of practical issues.
The aims of this course:
The course is designed to build an understanding of evolution of economic institutions and principles, regardless of students' previous knowledge and experience with economic science. It will mainly focus on historical development of basic concepts of economic theory and relationship between private and public sectors of the economy. On successful completion of the course, students are expected to have familiarity and an ability to analyze and discuss the history of economic thought and ideas of major economic thinkers.
The objective of this course is to help students learn and understand these concepts and principles as well as to apply them to real life situations.
