Concept of the political system and contemporary science of comparative political systems. Classification of political systems. Modern democracies in Europe and North America. New democracies in Central and Eastern Europe. Problems of democratic transformation in the former communist systems. Position and perspectives of the Republic of Croatia in this process of transformation. Problems of institution-building. New institutionalism. Theory of constitutional choice. A pluralist model of the political system. Theory of separation of powers and its implementation in contemporary developed democracies. Modern parliamentarism. Problems of application in the Croatian political system. Elections, voters and public opinion. Development of suffrage. Development and typology of contemporary electoral systems. Electoral processes. Types of elections (parliamentary, presidential, local elections). Referenda. Public opinion. Political parties and party systems. Development of political parties. Party organizations. Social context and ideology. Party competition. Party systems in democracies, semi-democracies and authoritarian regimes. Parties in post-communist states. Compound states and associations of states. Break-up of communist federations. Emergence of new independent states. Creation of the independent and sovereign Republic of Croatia.
