Description:

This course examines the origins and development of European integration since the turn of the 20th century. The first section of the course considers the antecedents of integration before 1914 and in the Interwar period. It provides a comparative basis for the second part, which focuses on the decade between the Marshall Plan and the Treaties of Rome. The final part of the course deals with the European Communities from their foundation until the Treaty of Maastricht and the evolution and role of the European Union law and institutions in the European Integration process. Through examining the key moments in the political and institutional development of European integration, students will gain a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the history of the EU and better insight into contemporary political and economic relations in Europe, the EU legal system and the process of decision making in the European Union.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

• Discuss institutional and normative development of European integration and its economic, political, diplomatic and international aspects;
• Designate and critically evaluate the factors that influenced the development of European integration and its institutions;
• Determine the origins, consequences and the importance of certain historical events and processes in the development of European integration and its organizations/institutions;
• Explain the historical, political, economic and ideological foundations of the European integration process;
• Identify the crucial processes and stages of the European integration and its institutional structure development.

APPLICATION

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Interpret the main trends and stages of historical development of European integration and institutions;
• Understand the historical dimension of the development of European integration and its institutions and the context within which the European public (and private) law developed;
• Apply the analytical and interpretative skills to understand the decision-making process in the European Union, the development of European law and the politics and political economy of contemporary Europe;

Analysis

After completing this course, students will be able to:

• Compare and notice the differences between individual Member States and their role in creation and development of the European Union and its institutions;
• Designate the key concepts by means of which they will be able to understand historical trends in the development of European integration and institutions, as well as some important events in this long-term process;
• Identify legal, political, social, economic and cultural factors and circumstances out of which such trends and patterns emerged from;

Synthesis

upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

• Define the main features of the development of the European integration process and its institutions in a wider historical context;
• Establish significance of certain European countries in the development of European integration, its institutions and legal superstructure as well as differences between them in regard to legal, economic and political issues;
• Determine a causal interpretation of the development of European integration and its institutions and its impact on the European public and private law;

Evaluation

After completing this course, students will be able to:

• Compare different approaches and views of the development of European integration, its institutions and European law, as well as the interaction between them and the process of their construction;
• Single out and appraise the importance of certain European regional organizations, processes and historical events as well as normative, political, economic, sociological and ideological foundations of European Union and its legal system;
• Scrutinize the teleological determinism and dynamic development process of European integration and its institutions;

 

Practical and Generic Skills:

After completing this course, students will be able to:

• Publicly present the learning outcomes;
• Communicate effectively in the public with clear arguments and taking into account different positions;
• Respect other people's views and reply to opposing opinions efficaciously;
• Work independently, but also to work as a part of a group with a sound attitude and awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of such work versus individual work.

After completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Students will throughout the course explore, compare and discuss the subject what will reflect their progress in preparing for exam;
2. Complex learning outcomes will build upon the knowledge of students and the identified deficiencies will be systematically addressed in order to prepare these students to the modes of monitoring and evaluation of acquired learning outcomes;
3. Students will be assessed orally by presenting their findings about the development of European integration and institutions which will be based on their essays;
